Why I Built an RxPertise Alternative — After Creating the Original

I created RxPertise in the mid-1990s to solve a problem I was living with every month: performing medication regimen reviews across long-term care facilities without a purpose-built tool. RxPertise became the standard for consultant pharmacists doing MRR work, and for a long time it served that role well. But the way we work has changed, and the technology that RxPertise was built on has not kept up.

That is why I built TrioMRR — not to compete with something I created, but to replace it with what I would build today if I were starting from scratch. If you are currently using RxPertise and wondering whether it is time to move on, this is what I would tell you in a demo, and what I tell every consultant pharmacist who calls.

What changes when you move from desktop to cloud

Most RxPertise users have only ever worked with desktop-installed MRR software. That means the benefits of a cloud-based platform are not always obvious until someone walks through them. Here is what actually changes day to day:

No installation, no version management. With TrioMRR, you open a browser, enter your credentials, and you are working. There is no installer to run, no version to track, and no concern about whether everyone in your group is on the same release. When we push an update — sometimes as often as weekly — it is live for everyone immediately. You never have to wait a year for the next major version.

Any device, any browser. TrioMRR runs on Mac or PC, in whatever browser you prefer. If your laptop dies, you can log in from another machine and pick up exactly where you left off. Your work is not tied to a single computer.

No backups, no data swaps. This is one of the biggest friction points with desktop MRR tools — managing your own backups, exporting data to hand off to another consultant, importing their data back in. With TrioMRR, your data lives in the cloud with automated encrypted backups. If a consultant covers one of your facilities for a week, they simply log in and see what they need to see. If you are an admin, you control who has access to which facilities.

Support is faster and simpler. When something comes up, our support team can look at your account directly rather than needing to remote into your physical machine. That means faster resolution with less disruption to your day.

Your RxPertise data comes with you

This is the concern I hear most often, and it is the one I can address most directly: your RxPertise data can be converted and brought into TrioMRR. You are not starting from scratch. Your historical reviews, your resident records, your recommendation history — it migrates over. I built both platforms, so the conversion path exists because I understand both data structures intimately.

What a typical demo looks like

When I walk someone through TrioMRR, I start with the monthly MRR workflow end to end — how you move through a facility’s census, how you document findings, how recommendations get routed and tracked. From there I show the reporting options, because that is where most consultant pharmacists immediately see the operational difference. If the person I am talking to manages other consultants, I walk through the admin features — user roles, facility-level access controls, and visibility settings.

By that point, most people want to get their hands on it. We offer a 30-day trial, and you have two options: you can start with a clean environment and explore the interface, or we can convert a sample of your RxPertise data — even just one facility — so you can evaluate TrioMRR with real context. Either way, we execute a BAA before any live PHI enters the system.

The honest pitch

I am not going to pretend RxPertise was a bad product. I built it, and it served tens of thousands of reviews over two decades. But the world moved to the cloud, and the MRR workflow deserves a platform that moved with it. TrioMRR is what I would have built in the 1990s if the technology had existed. It does now.
